SMS marketing is a powerful tool for elevating the results of your marketing efforts. The open rate for text messages is around 98%. If performed properly, you'll soon reap the amazing benefits of SMS for marketing. Before beginning SMS marketing and while you're waiting for your business verification it's a good idea to understand a few fundamentals such as how tags work and how to import contacts. After discussing tags and imports we'll go through how to use keywords and automations.

Part 1: Fundamentals

  1. Understanding Tags
  2. Importing Contacts

Part 2: Automations for Promotional Marketing

Part 1: Fundamentals

1. Understanding Tags

What's a tag? Tags are short descriptive words or phrases added to contact profiles. Tags are how you organize your contacts and how you identify specific groups of contacts for sending messages to multiple contacts at one time.

An example: A client texts you, so you add a tag to their profile indicating they are a client... you add the word "client" as a tag to their contact profile. Then a different person who is a sales lead for service X texts you for information so you add the word "Lead X" to their profile. And then you receive another lead from a different person for service Y so you add the word "Lead Y" to their profile. As the weeks go on you accumulate 15 leads for service X, 20 leads for service Y, and 50 clients in your Beetexting account.

You decide you want to text all your clients at once (a broadcast message) letting them know your holiday hours and how to contact you in case of an emergency. This is when tags become really important - when you create your broadcast message it will ask you which contacts you want to send your message to and you will choose which tags are the appropriate ones for the message. You choose the tag "clients" and now your holiday message sends to just your clients and not your leads.

This is a simple example of the basics of how tags work. But tags are the organization system behind your contacts helping you separate contacts into their appropriate buckets.

Before creating tags consider determining how you want your contacts organized. Tags are the most powerful when implemented with a plan. Here are some good tag ideas:

  1. Product/service
  2. Region
  3. Campaign attribution
  4. Industry vertical
  5. Marketing/deal stage
  6. Job role

How to Create a Tag

  • Open the Beetexting app on your desktop computer.
  • You should have at least one message in your conversations from yourself if you completed the Beetexting Trial Basics before moving on to this tutorial.
  • Select your message and look to the right - you will see your contact profile.
  • From the contact profile, there is a spot for adding tags. Add a tag or two here to see how it works.
  • Note: You want contacts to fit into similar tag names so keep these simple and not too detailed. If you want to add details then add those details as separate tags. For instance, let's take the following details about a client... they are a client, they are located in Nashville, they have both service x and service y from you. You could add the following 4 separate tags: "Client" "Service Y" "Service X" and "Nashville"

Viewing & Editing Tags

  • Open the Beetexting app on your desktop computer.
  • Select Tools in the left-hand column
  • Select Tags from the top row
  • From here you can see all your created tags, edit tags, create new tags and view which contacts are listed under each tag

2. Importing Contacts

There are many ways to gather contacts in your Beetexting account, but the fastest is through importing your existing contact lists.

  • Open the Beetexting app on your desktop computer.
  • In the second column from the left, the top row says "conversations" and "contacts". Select "contacts"
  • Select the middle icon to the right of the word "contacts" - that's the import icon.
  • From here there are a couple of different ways to import your contacts. You can import a CSV file or you can import from one of several different CRMs.
  • Download our CSV template and modify your CSV file to match. Make sure to read the notes.
  • Once your CSV file is ready then it's time to import. Drag and drop of select your file and follow the instructions for importing your contacts.
  • Important Note: If you are importing contacts that have not agreed to receiving text messages from you we strongly suggest either waiting until they have given you consent or adding a tag to their profile identifying them as people who haven't yet given you permission to text them. Do not text people without their consent - not only can this create unhappy customers and leads, but you may be penalized by your phone carrier. Read this post for more information regarding consent.

Part 2: Automations for Promotional Marketing

Now that you understand how tags work and how to import contacts let's discuss automations and how to use keywords with your automations.

Automations are any action that you set up one time and then run automatically in the background without your input.

1. Keyword Automations

Keywords are how automations are triggered in the Beetexting app for promotional marketing.

You can create marketing text message sequences that are triggered when specific keywords are texted into your Beetexting number.

For example, if you are running a digital campaign on Facebook your ad might say "interested in a 10% discount? Text the word DISCOUNT" to 333-333-3333. When the interested shopper texts in that word that tells your automation to begin sending your DISCOUNT keyword text message campaign to this shopper.

Whether it's a discount code, trial offer, free estimate, etc. you can use keywords to propel your marketing forward.

How to Setup a Keyword Automation

  • Open the Beetexting app on your desktop computer.
  • Select "Tools" in the left-hand column
  • Navigate to "Automations" in the top row
  • Select "Create automation"
  • Title your automation (this is an internal title - no one else sees this outside the organization).
  • For your conditions, change the dropdown to "Message Received" and "Exactly Matches".
  • Add the keyword you are using for your campaign.
  • Now it's time to add your actions - we recommend starting with a tag action to have a campaign attribution tag automatically added to your contact's profile so you can keep track of how many keyword opt-ins you receive from your campaign. (It's also a good idea to use separate keywords for different campaigns so you can monitor the ROI on your marketing more easily.)
  • Change the dropdown to "Add tag to contact immediately" and choose your tag.
  • Next select "add action"
  • For your second action choose "Send a reply immediately" to send your customer whatever incentive award you mentioned in your ad.
  • From here you can continue adding more actions. Once you're done simply turn the automation ON and select "Create"

Editing Your Keyword Automation

You can easily find and edit your automations anytime - here's how:

  • Open the Beetexting app on your desktop computer.
  • Select "Tools" in the left-hand column
  • Navigate to "Automations" in the top row
  • To the right of your automations is a "Manage" button.
  • Find the automation you'd like to edit/delete/turn off or on and select "Manage"
